In DeSmet, South Dakota do not miss this child friendly museum.
  • Visit the Ingalls Homestead where children are encouraged to touch and experience life on the frontier. Visitors can take a ride in a covered wagon and attend a one-room school house as well as standing inside a sod house.
  • See the Cottonwood trees planted by Pa Ingalls, and then visit the home of Laura Ingalls parents on Third Street in DeSmet. The Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society runs tours.
  • See the replica of the school where Laura Ingalls taught at the age of 15. Five of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books are set in this area. By the Shores of Silver Lake, The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie, These Happy Golden Years and The First Four Years.
  • See where Laura and Almanzo started homesteading.
  • Finish your visit by stopping by the De Smet cemetery where Ma, Pa, Carrie, Mary and Grace are buried.
