Did You Say Executive Director?

When Audrey Friend asked me to join the MSLMA Board in 1996 as
Publicity Chair, I was pleased. Being President of MSLMA in 1998 was both
a challenging and a growing experience. I continued on the Board working
with Joan Gallagher on the Legislative Committee and working with Donna
Guerin and Connie Schlotterbeck on the Model School Library Program
Rubrics. Now the MSLMA Board has asked me to take on a new role, that
of Executive Director.

MSLMA is filled with competent leaders as well as dedicated professionals
and my life has been blessed with this opportunity to continue working with
you.

Libraries and Librarians have played important roles in my life. Librarians
were my role models and mentors. From high school on, I have been
involved in working in libraries. I began my professional career working in
the Rock Island Public Library in Rock Island, Illinois and when I moved to
Massachusetts, I began my career in school libraries. I worked for 35 years
as a library media specialist in Bedford, Massachusetts.

In our MSLMA mission statement, we pledge to ensure that students and
teachers are effective users of ideas and information. This mission along
with MSLMA's stated objectives are my guiding principles as I strive to do
the work the MSLMA Board undertakes. I will try to do the day-to-day work of
our organization.

I am pleased to be in my new position and look forward to a great year.

Doris Smith,
MSLMA Executive Director
