Annual Awards Ceremony at MSLMA Conference Marianne McGowan, Norwood Junior High School, Awards Chair On Monday, October 28, President Dorothy McQuillan presented association awards in the Grand Ballroom at the Sturbridge Host Hotel. Donna Guerin, Public Relations Chair, and Connie Schlotterbeck, 7-12 Curriculum Chair assisted her. The first annual Ellen Berne Award was given to Bonnie Staiger-Matatall of Carver High School for "The Groundwater Project". Bonnie worked collaboratively with 9th grade science teachers and their students on this inquiry-based research project. As stated on the MSLMA webpage, Ellen Berne " a pioneer in integrating the Internet into the learning process." This award "serves as a memorial to her leadership and inspiration." Dr. Mary Czajkowski, Superintendent of the Agawam Public Schools, was presented with the 2002 Administrator Advocate for Excellence in School Library Media Programs Award. Criteria for selection of the award are based upon a school administrator's support of the integral role of the library media center in the total educational program. Dr. Czajkowski 's role in the promotion of effective school library media programs in Agawam is admirable. We commend her and thank her for her advocacy on behalf of our profession. The Audrey Friend Scholarship Award was established by MSLMA to assist students enrolled in a certified school library media degree program. President McQuillan recognized two outstanding future teacher librarians and presented each of them with $500.00 and a one-year membership in MSLMA. Beth Brooks lives in Newton and is enrolled at Simmons College. Beth worked as a substitute teacher librarian, during September 2002. In her essay, she stated that "I walked in wondering if I would be able to teach, and walked out knowing that I can, and that I love it." Linda Kimball lives in Hopkinton and is studying at Cambridge College. Linda states in her essay that "today, with increasing use of the Internet, some people feel that the role of the Library Media Specialist isn't needed as it once was. I strongly disagree. Who better to help guide students through the mountains of information than a Library Media Specialist?" We wish these future teacher librarians all the best in their degree programs and welcome them to MSLMA! View the 2002 MSLMA award winners here.88 |
